Convenience encourages habit-forming behavior. Cyclists who have a smooth parking experience once are more likely to return and use the same system again. Providers who invest in smart technology can foster stronger relationships with their users, translating into long-term engagement and retention. ## The bottom line: Why smart parking is the future The psychology of convenience plays a significant role in why cyclists choose smart bicycle parking. With enhanced security, time efficiency, and user-friendly experiences, these systems offer cyclists a compelling alternative to traditional parking options. As cities continue to embrace sustainable transportation solutions, the demand for smart bicycle parking is expected to grow, transforming the cycling landscape for the better. As we move towards a greener future, investing in smart bicycle parking not only enhances the cycling experience but also promotes a culture of convenience and security. [ParkMyBike](https://www.parkmybike.app/en){rel=""nofollow""} addresses these needs by offering advanced smart locks for bike lockers and garages, along with an intuitive app that allows cyclists to easily reserve and find lockers. Additionally, our admin dashboard provides streamlined management for these secure parking facilities, ensuring efficiency and reliability. With [ParkMyBike](https://www.parkmybike.app/en){rel=""nofollow""}, that secure, convenient, and connected parking is just a click away. # Why not all 'smart' bike parking is actually smart The term "smart" gets tossed around a lot in the tech world, especially when it comes to bike parking solutions. But just because a system is labeled as "smart" doesn’t necessarily mean it delivers. Let’s take a closer look at what truly makes a bike parking system smart—and why many current offerings fall short. ## 1. Real-time occupancy tracking A key feature of any smart bike parking system is the ability to track [real-time occupancy](https://www.parkmybike.app/en?utm_source=LinkedIn&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=opinion){rel=""nofollow""}. This lets cyclists know which parking spots are available before they even get there. Ideally, real-time tracking should be accessible via an app, making it easy to see open spots in real-time. Unfortunately, many systems still rely on outdated or manual tracking, resulting in inaccurate or stale data. Cyclists may find themselves heading to a spot that’s already full, wasting valuable time. This frustration can lead to abandoned trips, which ultimately defeats the purpose of a smart system. A truly smart system should offer accurate, real-time data, ensuring cyclists know exactly where they can park before they arrive. This not only saves time but also makes the entire parking experience much smoother. ## 2. User-friendly apps A smart bike parking system isn’t complete without an [intuitive app](https://www.parkmybike.app/en/consumers?utm_source=LinkedIn&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=opinion){rel=""nofollow""}. The app should allow cyclists to easily reserve spots, get real-time updates, and access additional features like payment options or security alerts. Yet, many apps are still overly complicated or prone to glitches. A clunky app won’t do much good—if cyclists can’t figure out how to navigate it or run into technical issues, they’re likely to abandon it. A good app should feel natural to use. It should simplify the parking process, not add extra hassle. When the app works seamlessly, cyclists are more likely to trust the system and use it regularly. ## 3. Automated security features Bike theft is one of the biggest concerns for cyclists. If a smart parking system doesn’t provide adequate security, it’s doing more harm than good. A truly smart bike parking solution should have automated [security features](https://www.parkmybike.app/en?utm_source=LinkedIn&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=opinion){rel=""nofollow""}, such as remote-locking mechanisms, to ensure bikes are securely locked when not in use. If security is left to the user’s discretion or isn’t integrated well into the system, cyclists will still worry about theft. Automated security systems create peace of mind, which is crucial for a smart system’s success. By incorporating remote-locking systems and possibly even surveillance cameras or sensors, a smart parking system can give cyclists confidence that their bikes are safe and secure. ## 4. Integration with city infrastructure Smart bike parking systems are most effective when they’re part of a larger, connected urban ecosystem. For example, bike lockers near public transport hubs, such as train or bus stations, make it easier for cyclists to switch to other forms of transportation. Too many systems, however, focus solely on bike parking, ignoring the larger urban transport context. They’re often placed far from key destinations like transit hubs, workplaces, or bike-sharing stations, missing a key opportunity to improve bike commuting. For a system to truly benefit cyclists and the city, it needs to be integrated with other modes of transport. By placing bike parking near transport hubs and bike-sharing stations, cities can encourage seamless transitions between biking and public transport, reducing congestion and promoting sustainable mobility. ## Let’s actually make it smart While many systems claim to be “smart,” the real difference lies in how well they meet the needs of cyclists and cities. It’s not about flashy technology for the sake of it—it’s about making biking easier, safer, and more convenient for the user, while supporting the broader goals of sustainable urban mobility. At [ParkMyBike](https://www.parkmybike.app/en?utm_source=LinkedIn&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=opinion){rel=""nofollow""}, we’re committed to making bike parking truly smart. By combining advanced technology, an intuitive user experience, and robust security, we’re creating solutions that meet today’s needs and pave the way for a smarter, more sustainable future. # ParkMyBike Subscriptions At ParkMyBike, we strive to make bike parking as simple and accessible as possible. That’s why we offer providers and manufacturers the ability to offer subscriptions. Cyclists can easily get a subscription through the ParkMyBike app, while providers efficiently manage these subscriptions via the Admin Dashboard. In this blog, we discuss how we developed this functionality, from technical challenges to implementation. ## A new design in an existing app We wanted to add subscriptions without completely overhauling the app. Since subscriptions are optional for providers, we made sure the changes are only visible when a provider supports subscriptions. This way, the [ParkMyBike app](https://www.parkmybike.app/en/consumers){rel=""nofollow""} remains clear and easy-to-use for everyone. Subscribing to a locker or garage had to be as easy as making a single reservation. Now, you can immediately see in the app if a subscription is available, and choose between monthly or yearly payments. And for the avid cyclists: you can also have multiple subscriptions! No one wants to constantly check for availability, so we also added a waiting list. In our backend and apps, we made sure that cyclists are automatically placed on the waiting list, receive a notification when a spot becomes available, and can immediately use the locker or garage after payment. Additionally, there’s now a clearer overview in the app. You can see which subscriptions you have, cancel them at any time, and on the home screen, you can not only view your reservations but also your active subscriptions. ![](https://www.parkmybike.app/images/blog/20250328_ENG_APp.webp) ## Changes in the Admin Dashboard With the new subscriptions in the app, the [Admin Dashboard](https://www.parkmybike.app/en/governments-and-pioneers){rel=""nofollow""} also needed an update. The result? A clear dashboard where admins can easily set which lockers or garages are available for subscriptions and whether they can be booked monthly or yearly. Behind the scenes, our backend team set up a system for payments, cancellations, and waiting list management. Everything now runs automatically, allowing admins to focus on other tasks. Furthermore, the Dashboard has become even more intuitive. Admins can now see at a glance how many people are on the waiting list and which locations are popular. The availability of subscriptions and prices at each location are now visible on our [website](https://www.parkmybike.app/en){rel=""nofollow""} as well. Everything is perfectly integrated! ![](https://www.parkmybike.app//images/blog/export02en.webp) ![](https://www.parkmybike.app/images/blog/export02en.webp) ### A step forward for ParkMyBike Subscriptions make bike parking easier and more attractive for cyclists. It also gives providers of bike lockers and garages the opportunity to expand their service and reach a larger customer base. A significant step forward for ParkMyBike! This term refers to the distance between a public transport hub (such as a train station or bus stop) and a commuter's final destination. While cities have made great strides in expanding public transport systems, the last mile remains a difficult gap to bridge. But what if the solution lies in a mode of transport that is as eco-friendly as it is effective, cycling? ## Understanding the Last Mile problem The Last Mile problem is one of the most significant hurdles in modern transportation systems, particularly in urban environments. It refers to the challenge of covering the final leg of a commuter’s journey, from the nearest public transit station (bus, train, subway) to their final destination, whether that's their home, office, or other points of interest. This final stretch often represents a significant barrier to the overall efficiency of public transport, as it can be too short to justify driving and too far for walking, leading many people to abandon public transport in favor of driving or, worse, using inefficient, individual transport options like taxis or rideshare services. ## The cost of the Last Mile problem The implications of the Last Mile problem are far-reaching. Firstly, it impacts congestion. When commuters opt to drive the last mile rather than using public transport or cycling, they contribute to the growing traffic problem, especially in urban centers where road space is limited. Secondly, it has environmental consequences. Cars and taxis are responsible for significant greenhouse gas emissions, so each additional car on the road adds to pollution and undermines sustainability goals. Public transport systems can be efficient in covering longer distances, but without solutions for the last mile, their effectiveness is limited. To truly optimize public transport networks, cities need to address this gap and provide commuters with viable, sustainable alternatives for completing the final leg of their journey. ## The role of cycling in solving the Last Mile problem Cycling presents a promising solution to the Last Mile problem. It's fast, flexible, and significantly more sustainable than driving. In many cities, cycling is already one of the most efficient ways to navigate short distances. A bike can quickly take a commuter from a transit station to their destination, avoiding the delays and frustrations of car traffic, while also contributing to reduced carbon emissions. But, for cycling to truly become a mainstream solution to the last mile problem, cities need to ensure that cyclists have access to safe, convenient, and secure parking options. Without these, potential cyclists may be deterred from using their bikes to complete their commutes, especially when the prospect of theft or vandalism looms large. ## Smart bike lockers: The missing piece This is where smart bike lockers come into play. Traditional bike racks or open-air parking are often inadequate, offering little protection against theft or the elements. A dedicated, secure space to park a bike, especially at transit stations, could make all the difference in encouraging commuters to use bicycles as their Last Mile solution. Smart bike lockers address this by providing secure, weatherproof, and user-friendly parking options that integrate modern technology, such as app-based access, making them a far more reliable and convenient choice for commuters. ## Implementation: A few things to consider While smart bike lockers offer significant potential, there are a few factors to keep in mind when planning their implementation: - **Initial investment**: Installing smart bike lockers and supporting infrastructure like e-bike charging stations involves upfront costs. However, these should be seen as long-term investments that will reduce congestion, improve sustainability, and enhance the commuter experience. - **Space availability**: In densely populated urban areas, space is limited. Creative solutions, such as repurposing underutilized areas at transit hubs or converting street parking spaces, can help maximize space without disrupting existing infrastructure. - **Raising awareness**: To ensure high usage, cities must raise awareness about the availability and benefits of smart bike lockers. Effective marketing campaigns and integration with public transport apps can make it easy for commuters to find and use these facilities. - **Integration into broader mobility systems**: Smart bike lockers should be part of an integrated mobility strategy, connecting cycling seamlessly with public transport. Cycling shouldn’t be viewed as a separate transport mode, but as part of an interconnected system alongside walking and transit. ## Moving forward: The need for investment in cycling infrastructure If cities are serious about reducing congestion, lowering emissions, and improving the overall efficiency of their transportation networks, investing in bike parking infrastructure is a crucial step. By combining secure, smart bike lockers with a robust public transport network, cities can unlock the full potential of cycling as a Last Mile solution. At [ParkMyBike](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""}, we’re committed to solving the last mile problem with secure, smart bike lockers. Our lockers offer real-time occupancy tracking, app-based access, and enhanced security, making cycling a convenient and reliable choice for commuters. Together, we can make cycling a key part of a sustainable transportation future. # Beyond security: Creating a better bike parking experience We’ve said it before: cyclists today are no longer just looking for a secure spot to leave their bike. They want a better overall experience. But what does that really mean? What makes a bike parking experience good? Here are some aspects to consider. ## Accessibility A big part of convenience is how easy it is to actually park. Cyclists want to pull up, secure their bike in seconds, and move on. That’s why access via an app is becoming the standard for smart lockers and secured parking. It removes the need for keys, cards, or codes. Just arrive, lock, and go. ## Predictability It’s frustrating to cycle somewhere and find every spot full, especially when you’re in a rush. Cyclists want to know in advance where there’s space. Being able to check real-time availability makes a big difference here. It removes uncertainty, saves time, and builds trust in the system. A predictable experience is one you’ll return to. ## Reassurance Security is still part of the picture, but reassurance today also means staying informed. For example, receiving a live notification about how much time is left on your rental or what the cost will be. These small signals give cyclists a sense of control and make the whole experience better. ## Flexibility Cyclists rarely make a trip solely to park their bike. Parking is just one stop along the way. Whether someone is going shopping or catching public transport, parking should be available when and where it is needed. This is where flexibility becomes part of convenience. It means fitting into how people already move, not just existing in a few central zones. ## Final thoughts It’s easy to overlook how much bike parking affects a cyclist’s trip. It should make things easier, not more complicated. Now, the real question is how quickly providers and manufacturers can adapt to the experience cyclists need. Do you want to improve your bike parking experience? Discover what ParkMyBike can do for you: [www.parkmybike.app](http://www.parkmybike.app){rel=""nofollow""} # What is smart bike parking and how does it work? What makes a bike parking system “smart”? And how does smart bike parking actually work? Let’s break it down. ## What is smart bike parking? Smart bicycle parking is a system that uses technology to make bike parking easier to use and manage. Cyclists typically use an app to open a bike locker or garage, and they can also use the app to find and reserve their spot. This makes bike parking easier and quicker. In addition, a smart bike parking system allows operators to manage their parking digitally through one dashboard. They can for instance see which spots are in use, manage access and prices, and offer remote support. ## How does smart bike parking work? A smart parking system consists of several hardware and software components that work together. Here’s how it works when a cyclist opens a bike locker: 1. The cyclist tries to open the locker using the app. 2. Their phone communicates with the lock via Bluetooth® or an internet connection. 3. The hardware module in the locker checks the request with the backend system. 4. If authorised, the lock will open. At the same time, user data is communicated to the Admin dashboard so operators can keep track. All interactions between the app, hardware, and dashboard thus occur securely over one system. ## Types of smart bike parking There are several types of smart bike parking, with the most common being smart lockers, garages, and shelters: - **Smart bike lockers** are individual units that store one bike each. Lockers are often grouped together under a single hardware module that controls all of them. For example, with a 3G hardware module from [ParkMyBike](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""}, one module can manage up to eight lockers. - **Smart bike garages**, also called bike hangars, typically hold four to six bikes behind a single door and lock. One hardware module controls this lock, providing digital access to all bikes inside. - **Smart bike shelters** are larger-scale versions of bike garages and can accommodate many bikes in one location. They are again secured by a single door or lock, which is controlled by a hardware module. ## Why upgrade to smart bike parking? Traditional bike parking often comes with common challenges: lost keys, limited control, and high maintenance. Cyclists often don’t know if parking is available and can misplace keys, staff spend significant time on administration and on-site support, and operators have little insight into how the parking is being used. Smart bike parking adresses these issues. Cyclists can reserve and access bike lockers or garages via the app, eliminating the need for physical keys. With the dashboard, operators can view real-time occupancy of their lockers and handle payments automatically. And staff can use either the dashboard or maintenance app to handle support remotely. ## Interested? ParkMyBike has it all. Recently, he shared his experience with ParkMyBike and how it has transformed his daily commute. ## Easier than expected Cor first considered cycling to Spijkenisse, but he was hesitant. “I had been hesitating for a long time about cycling to Spijkenisse, it seemed like such a hassle,” he explains. When he discovered that bike lockers were available and learned how simple they were to use, he decided to give it a try. After a few rides, he found it surprisingly easy and quickly felt comfortable using the system. ## Cycling to work Now, on weekdays with good weather, Cor cycles to De Akkers metro station in Spijkenisse and continues his journey to work in The Hague by public transport. “The app was a bit tricky at first, but once you’ve used it a few times, it works smoothly,” he says. Over time, cycling, parking, and continuing his commute became a seamless routine. ## Freedom and flexibility What Cor values most about using the bike lockers is the independence it gives him. **“I am much less dependent on the bus connection between Spijkenisse and Zuidland.”** He notices this especially on the return journey: “I have often experienced the metro arriving at the station and then seeing the bus drive away, which is quite frustrating.” By taking his bike, he no longer has to wait for buses, which can sometimes take half an hour, and he doesn’t have to worry about the schedule. “I can also return at, for example, 8 p.m. At the supervised bike parking, that’s only possible until 7 p.m.” ## A fresh start to the day Beyond convenience and independence, Cor also enjoys the bike ride itself. “It’s wonderful to ride early in the morning through the countryside and nature.” It gives him a refreshing start to the day, and of course, the extra exercise is an added bonus. # ParkMyBike with iLOQ: Exploring a possible integration At ParkMyBike, we’re constantly looking for ways to make bike parking easier and smarter. From expanding internationally to launching new features, 2025 has been a year full of growth and innovation. Here’s a look at what we’ve accomplished at ParkMyBike. ## New connections ### Expanding internationally We’ve officially expanded to the UK! And not just with one location; this year we’ve unlocked 20 new locations, including Bristol, Shrewsbury, and Yate. On top of that, we’ve launched twelve new smart lockers in the Belgian town of Peer. These international additions mark an important milestone in our mission to make bike parking easier for everyone, everywhere. And the good news? There’s more to come very soon! ### New partnerships Our recent expansions have been made possible thanks to ongoing collaborations with bike parking manufacturers Falco UK and Epsilon Cities. We’re proud to work closely with them and our other partners, including Velo-Boxx and Armada Mobility, and look forward to welcoming more partners in the near future. ## New features ### A smarter ParkMyBike Admin Dashboard We’ve made bike parking management even easier with updates to the Admin Dashboard. - **History insights**: Every lock and unlock action is now recorded in a log you can view directly in the dashboard. You can also see who performed each action and add comments when needed. - **Improved onboarding**: Providers are now guided step by step through creating an account, setting up payments with Mollie Connect, adding locations and pricing, and going live. - **Advanced statistics**: You can now track parking occupancy over any period, from the past week up to a full year, and filter by location. Plus, you can check the average reservations per hour to spot peak usage times. ### Subscriptions Users can now easily get a subscription for their own parking spot in the app. If spots are full, they’re added to a waitlist and notified as soon as one becomes available. With this, managers can offer the [subscriptions](https://www.parkmybike.app/blog/HSDsZn-parkmybike-subscriptions){rel=""nofollow""} and manage the waitlist directly in the dashboard. ### New languages To support our international expansion, we now support French across the app, dashboard, and website. Additionally, we’ve made it easier to add any language in the future. So if you have a specific need, let us know! ### Live notifications for cyclists Cyclists can now see the status of their reservation or rental directly on their home or lock screens with persistent notifications. The notification will show a live countdown, remaining time, and real-time cost updates. This helps them stay informed and avoid forgetting their reservations. ### Supporting physical key management We’ve also made developments to support physical key management. This means that providers of bike parking can still keep their physical keys, while managing everything digitally! Kind regards, :br The ParkMyBike team # Why mobility hubs need smart bike parking Mobility hubs are becoming key points in urban transport networks. They connect cycling, public transport, shared mobility, cars and sometimes more in one location. Especially in larger hubs and bike parking shelters, the scale and usage are increasing quickly. As mobility hubs grow in scale and complexity, traditional bike parking starts to show its limits. This is where smart bike parking becomes not just useful, but necessary. ## Bigger hubs bring bigger complexity Conventional bike parking in hubs often relies on manual processes, physical keys, or fragmented access systems. While this may work in small installations, it becomes inefficient in larger shelters or high-traffic mobility hubs. More users means more access moments, more movement throughout the day, and more operational pressure. Common challenges include: - Users losing or sharing physical keys - Limited visibility for operators on usage and occupancy - Manual handling of access permissions or subscriptions - Difficulties in scaling across multiple locations - Lack of real-time insight into performance and demand As usage increases, these limitations become more visible and costly to manage. That’s why many cities are now choosing to switch to smart bike parking. ## What smart bike parking changes Smart bike parking introduces a digital layer on top of physical infrastructure. It connects lockers, shelters, and access systems to software that manages everything from user access to operational control. In practice, this means: - Users can reserve and unlock parking spaces via an app - Operators can manage all access remotely through a dashboard - Access rights can be updated instantly without physical intervention - Usage data becomes available in real time - Maintenance and support become more efficient In larger mobility hubs, this shift is significant. It reduces operational friction while improving the experience for both users and operators. ## Especially relevant for larger shelters The bigger the bike parking facility, the more important structure and control become. Large mobility hubs and multi-level shelters often combine different user groups, time-based access, and high turnover throughout the day. In that context, consistency becomes difficult without a digital system supporting the physical infrastructure. Smart bike parking helps make large-scale operations manageable without increasing operational complexity. ## Mobility hubs need integrated systems Mobility hubs are no longer just parking locations. They are part of a wider transport network where different modes need to connect smoothly. Bike parking plays a key role in that system, especially in cities that are pushing cycling as a primary transport mode. As these hubs grow, the infrastructure behind them needs to scale as well. Smart bike parking is what connects physical infrastructure to that wider system. ## ParkMyBike: The all-round solution for smart bicycle parking This is exactly where [ParkMyBike](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""} comes in. We add a digital access and management layer on top of existing bike parking infrastructure, making mobility hubs easier to operate, easier to scale, and ready for higher usage without added complexity. [Schedule a demo](https://www.parkmybike.app/contact){rel=""nofollow""} and see what ParkMyBike can do for you. You can find more information [here](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""}. # The renewed ParkMyBike helpdesk Managing bike parking is not just about access and hardware. It is also about what happens when something goes wrong. A broken locker or an access issue needs to be solved quickly and clearly. That is exactly what the renewed ParkMyBike helpdesk is built for. We’ve upgraded the system to make support faster, clearer, and easier to manage for both cyclists and operators. ## Image sharing for faster understanding In many cases, context is everything. That is why image sharing has been added to the helpdesk. Cyclists can now attach one or multiple photos when reporting an issue. This helps operators immediately understand the situation and respond correctly. If no images are added initially, they can still be shared later during the chat. ![](https://www.parkmybike.app/images/blog/Newsletter_ImageSharing.webp) ## Live chat with cyclists Chat is now fully integrated into the ParkMyBike helpdesk. When a cyclist reports an issue, operators can respond directly through the dashboard. The conversation continues in real time, and cyclists receive replies instantly in the app. This removes delays and avoids unnecessary back-and-forth through external channels. Operators and cyclists are also notified immediately when a new message comes in, via push notification or email, so nothing gets missed. ![](https://www.parkmybike.app/images/blog/Newsletter_LiveChatting.webp) ## From issue to maintenance in one flow Support does not stop at communication. It continues into action. With the renewed helpdesk, reported issues can be assigned directly to a maintenance partner from the dashboard. All relevant information is shared instantly, including details and images provided by the cyclist. From there, the maintenance partner can schedule the task with a specific engineer. The assignment is then visible in the ParkMyBike app, so the engineer knows exactly what needs to be done and when. This ensures everyone knows what needs to happen, and the status of each task stays clear from start to finish. ![](https://www.parkmybike.app/images/blog/feedbackConvertedToTask.webp) ## Why this matters Bike parking systems are often used in high-traffic, public environments. Small issues can quickly turn into operational friction when communication is slow or unclear. By combining chat, maintenance workflows, and image sharing in one system, the ParkMyBike helpdesk creates a single connected flow from issue to resolution. Cyclists get help when they need it. Operators stay in control. Maintenance partners know exactly what to do. ## Upgrade to smarter bike parking [ParkMyBike](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""} provides a complete smart bike parking solution that combines hardware, software, and management tools. You can [book a demo](https://www.parkmybike.app/contact){rel=""nofollow""} with our founder Tom or learn more here: [parkmybike.app](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""}. --- **In short, the ParkMyBike helpdesk now includes:** - Photo support for clearer issue reporting - Live chat between cyclists and operators - Maintenance task assignment and scheduling # E-bike parking: why secure storage and charging now go hand in hand More cyclists are switching to electric bikes, and that shift is changing what people expect from bike parking. An e-bike isn't simply a bicycle that costs more. It comes with a battery that needs charging regularly, and that battery happens to be the part thieves want most. For a long time, "secure bike parking" mostly meant a sturdy lock and a roof over your head. For e-bike riders, that's no longer the whole story. Increasingly, the question isn't just "where can I lock my bike safely?", but also "where can I charge it while it's locked up?" ## A battery changes what "secure" means An e-bike battery is valuable, portable and relatively easy to remove, which is exactly what makes it attractive to thieves. Riders increasingly look for parking that protects the whole bike, battery included, not just the frame and wheels. At the same time, that battery needs regular charging. Commuters who ride an e-bike to work, or who use one through an employer or mobility scheme, can't always charge it at home before every trip. They need a spot along the way that combines safe storage with the option to plug in. ## Charging is becoming part of the parking question This is exactly where the two needs start to overlap. A bike locker that only offers a secure space solves half the problem. Add a built-in charging point, and the same locker takes care of the other half too: a charged battery, and the peace of mind that the bike won't be tampered with while it's plugged in. It's a small addition with a big effect on how useful a parking spot actually is. For commuters, students and visitors travelling by e-bike, a locker with charging turns "somewhere to leave my bike" into "somewhere I actually want to leave my bike." ## Already part of the ParkMyBike network This isn't a future scenario for ParkMyBike. More than a dozen ParkMyBike locations across the Netherlands — from Nissewaard and Lochem to towns throughout Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland — already include a built-in charging station for electric bikes, alongside secure, app-controlled access. Cyclists at these locations can find, reserve and unlock a locker, and let their e-bike charge, all through the ParkMyBike app. This combination matters for manufacturers and providers building new locations too. In the ParkMyBike product overview, "Charges bicycle" is listed as a feature alongside power source and dimensions. Charging is no longer a nice-to-have; it's a spec that providers and cyclists alike are starting to look for. ## Why this matters going forward As more cyclists switch to electric bikes, demand for parking that does both — protect the bike and charge it — will only grow. Locations that already combine the two have an advantage: they meet a need that traditional racks and basic lockers simply can't. For cities, employers, transit hubs and housing developments, that makes charging-enabled lockers less of an upgrade and more of a baseline expectation for the years ahead. ## ParkMyBike: built for how people cycle today [ParkMyBike](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""} connects secure, app-controlled bike lockers and garages — including locations with built-in e-bike charging — into one smart parking system for cyclists, providers and manufacturers. You lock it, walk to the platform, and hope it's still there when you get back. For a lot of people, often enough, it isn't. Bike theft in the Netherlands has been going up for several years now. Police registered somewhere around 87,000 reports in the past year, but that number only tells part of the story, because plenty of people never bother to report a stolen bike at all. Insurers and cycling organisations put the real figure much higher. Stations and busy shopping streets are among the places where it happens most, which makes sense: lots of bikes, lots of people passing through, and a rider who is gone for hours. So the question isn't really "should I lock my bike" anymore. It's "where do I leave it so it's actually still mine tonight." ## A rack does less than you'd think The default at most stations is an open rack, sometimes under a roof, sometimes not. You clip on a lock and go. It's better than nothing, but not by as much as people assume. An open rack leaves the whole bike exposed. A thief can see exactly what's there, take their time, and work on the lock or just lift off whatever comes loose: a saddle, a light, a battery. Cable locks in particular come off in seconds, and even a decent U-lock only buys time. Time is the one thing that helps, but on a quiet rack at the edge of a car park, there's plenty of it. This is also why the shift to e-bikes and fatbikes has made things worse. Those bikes are worth more, and the battery is both valuable and easy to walk off with. A rack does nothing to hide any of that. ## Even guarded parking isn't automatic safety The usual advice is to use a guarded bike shed where you can. That's fair, and a staffed shed genuinely lowers the odds. But it's worth being honest about the limits. Bikes still go missing from guarded and enclosed facilities. A shared shed is still a big open room where anyone with a ticket can wheel a bike out, and a busy attendant can't watch every stand at once. "Guarded" is not the same as "yours alone." That gap is exactly where a lot of station thefts still happen. ## What actually changes the odds The thing that makes the real difference is putting the bike somewhere a thief can't see it, can't reach it, and can't linger over it. An individual locker does all three. One bike, one closed door, no view of what's inside and no way to get a tool onto the frame or the battery. That's the idea ParkMyBike is built around. Instead of an open stand or a shared room, you get your own enclosed locker that you find, reserve and open from the app on your phone. The bike sits behind a locked door the whole time, out of sight and out of reach. At many locations you can charge an e-bike while it's in there too, so the battery isn't a reason to lug it onto the train with you. We put these lockers where the daily gamble actually happens: park and ride sites, carpool spots, and bus, train and metro stations. That's the whole point. The moments people feel least sure about leaving a bike are the moments a proper locker is worth the most. ## Where you'll find them This isn't a pilot. ParkMyBike now runs more than 300 subscription parking spaces across the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and France, with the first locations dating back to 2016 in Fryslân. From a metro stop in Nissewaard to park and ride locations across Drenthe, Groningen and Friesland, cyclists reserve and unlock a locker straight from the app, leave the bike behind a closed door, and get on with the rest of the trip. For a municipality or a transport hub, that's also a quieter way to make cycling to the station feel like a safe choice rather than a risk. People cycle more when they trust their bike will be there later. A locker is one of the few things that earns that trust directly. ## Park at the station without the gamble [ParkMyBike](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""} turns secure, app-controlled bike lockers and garages into one smart parking system for cyclists, providers and manufacturers, including locations right where you catch your train. A shed, a hallway, a spare corner of a garage. Plenty of people don't. If you live in a flat or a narrow terraced house, the bike either goes up the stairs every night or it stays out on the street, and the street is where bikes get stolen. The usual answer to that is shared residential storage: a small on-street unit that holds a handful of bikes, rented by the people who live nearby. In the UK these are the cycle hangars you now see bolted onto the road. In the Netherlands they're buurtstallingen and fietstrommels, the enclosed communal units tucked into residential streets. Same idea in both places, and the same problem. There aren't enough of them, and the wait to get in is long. How long? In London the combined waiting list for secure hangar spaces passed 60,000 people last year, with Southwark alone counting more than 8,000 residents queuing for a spot. In Utrecht the council's own figures put the wait for a place in a fietstrommel at up to nine years, and up to four and a half years for a neighbourhood shed. These aren't edge cases. For a lot of people in a dense city, that queue is just what trying to store a bike properly looks like. ## Building more units is only half the answer The obvious response is to install more, and councils are doing exactly that. Southwark approved millions of pounds for thousands of extra hangar spaces, and Dutch cities keep adding units year after year. It helps. It also doesn't close the gap on its own. The reason is that supply isn't the only thing rationing these spaces. A good chunk of the delay isn't a shortage of steel on the pavement, it's how the existing units get run. Most residential storage is still managed the way it always was: a physical key handed over in person, a waiting list kept in a spreadsheet or on paper, and no real way to see which spaces are actually being used day to day. When someone moves away or simply stops cycling, their key can sit in a drawer for months before anyone reclaims the spot. On the list the unit reads as full. On the street it's half empty. That's the part worth sitting with. Some of the people stuck near the bottom of a nine-year list are waiting on spaces that aren't genuinely occupied, just never turned over. ## Access and admin are the real bottleneck Keys are the quiet villain here. A key has to be cut, handed out, chased up when someone leaves, and replaced when it's lost. Every one of those steps needs a person, and that person is usually stretched across a whole city of units. So turnover is slow by design. Nobody is doing anything wrong, the process just leaks time at every handover. The waiting list has the same weakness. If it lives in a spreadsheet, nobody in the queue can see where they stand, and the operator has to phone round to fill each opening. Payments and renewals add another layer of manual work on top. None of it is complicated. There's just a lot of it, and it all sits on someone's desk. So when a resident asks why the wait is nine years, the honest answer is rarely "we have no units." It's closer to "we can't move people through the ones we have fast enough." ## What smart management changes This is the side of the problem ParkMyBike is built for. The bike garages we work with hold four to six bikes each, which is the same footprint as a hangar or a fietstrommel, but the access and the admin move into software. Instead of a key, residents find, reserve and open their space from the app on their phone. When someone moves out, the space frees up in the system straight away, so it can go to the next person without a key ever changing hands. The waiting list is digital: people join it, subscribe and manage their own spot from the app, while the operator sees the whole picture from one dashboard, including which spaces are actually in use. Payments and renewals run through the same place, so a space that goes quiet gets noticed and reassigned instead of sitting idle. It also doesn't mean ripping out what's already on the street. The system works with existing locks as well as our own, so a council or a housing provider can make the units they already have smart rather than starting from scratch. We now run more than 300 subscription parking spaces across the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and France, a fair share of them exactly this kind of small residential unit. None of that magics up more parking on its own. But it means the units already installed do more work, spaces turn over in days instead of months, and the list actually moves. For someone who's been waiting years, that's the difference that matters. ## Shorten the list without waiting for more steel [ParkMyBike](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""} turns secure, app-controlled bike lockers and garages into one smart system for cyclists, providers and manufacturers, with the waiting list, subscriptions and access all managed from a single dashboard. [Schedule a demo](https://www.parkmybike.app/contact){rel=""nofollow""} to see how ParkMyBike can help your city or housing provider get more out of the residential storage you already have, or find a spot near you at [parkmybike.app](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""}. # How to rent a bike locker (and what to check before you do) At some point most cyclists have the same quiet thought. The bike out front is worth more than they'd like to lose, the rack it's chained to isn't really doing much, and there's probably a better spot for it somewhere close by. Usually that better spot is a locker. The catch is that "renting a bike locker" still sounds like something out of 2005. A waiting list, a deposit, a form at the town hall, maybe a coin slot and a key you're scared to lose. For a long time that's more or less what it was. It isn't anymore, at least not where the whole thing has moved onto your phone. So here's how renting a locker actually works now, and the handful of things worth checking before you commit to one. ## What renting a locker looks like now The old model was built around keys and paperwork. You'd track down whoever ran the lockers, join a queue, leave a deposit, and eventually get a physical key for one specific door. If you moved or stopped needing it, that was another trip and another form. The version that's spread over the past few years skips almost all of that. You find a free locker on a map, reserve it, and open it from an app when you get there. There's no key to carry and no office hours to work around. For the people who run the lockers, the same shift means they don't have to hand out keys or chase invoices by hand, which is a big part of why more of them offer it this way now. ## How it works with ParkMyBike Ours is one of the systems that works like this, so I'll use it as the concrete example. The steps are deliberately boring, which is the point. You download the ParkMyBike app, create an account, and add a payment method once. After that you search for available spots near you, reserve one, and unlock it when you arrive. When you're done you end the rental in the app, and payment is handled automatically. If you rent month after month, you're not re-entering card details every time. You also get to choose how you rent. A single use makes sense if you just need somewhere safe for an afternoon. A personal subscription fits a daily commute. There's a business option too, for employers who want to offer their people a proper spot rather than a rack by the door. The app is on both iOS and Android, and the locker itself can use our own SmartLock or an existing lock, since the system is built to connect to most of what's already out there. ## What to check before you rent A locker is only worth it if it's the right locker, so a few things are worth a look first. Start with location, because it's the one that actually decides whether you'll use it. A locker two streets past where you're going will quietly stop getting used. The good ones sit exactly where you already stop: next to the station entrance, at the bus stop, at the park and ride where you swap the bike for a train. If you ride an electric bike, check whether the spot offers charging. A lot of our locations do, which means the battery tops up behind a locked door instead of coming with you onto the train. Some lockers add small comforts on top of that, like interior lighting for the dark half of the year or a hook for a wet raincoat. Then there's who runs it and what it costs. Lockers are usually operated by a municipality or a local provider, and they set their own rates and conditions. In practice that's often a modest daily rate or a monthly subscription, but it's worth reading the specific terms for the spot you're eyeing rather than assuming. And be honest with yourself about single use versus a subscription. If you'll park there most days, the subscription almost always wins. ## Where you'll actually find one This part surprises people. Smart lockers aren't a pilot in one clever city anymore. ParkMyBike now runs more than 300 subscription parking spaces across the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and France, with the first ones dating back to 2016 in Fryslân. A lot of them sit at exactly the spots described above. There are forty lockers at metro station De Akkers in Nissewaard, complete with e-bike charging, and clusters of lockers at park and ride sites and bus stops across Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland where people leave the bike and pick up public transport. If there's one near you, it'll show up in the app. ## Park behind a locked door instead of on an open rack [ParkMyBike](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""} turns secure, app-controlled bike lockers and garages into one smart parking system for cyclists, providers and manufacturers. Find a spot near you and rent it straight from the app at [parkmybike.app](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""}, or [get in touch](https://www.parkmybike.app/contact){rel=""nofollow""} if you run a location and want to offer app-controlled lockers to your cyclists. # How to park a cargo bike securely (when it won't fit the rack) Ten years ago a bakfiets outside a school was a bit of a statement. Now it's just the school run. Groceries, two kids, the dog, the weekly shop, all of it goes on the cargo bike, and on plenty of streets in the Netherlands and Belgium there are more of them parked out front than cars. Which leaves one problem nobody really solved on the way up: where do you put the thing when you're not riding it? A normal bike you lean against a rack, click a lock, and walk off. A cargo bike is a meter and a half of frame, usually electric, and often worth more than the secondhand car it replaced. It doesn't fit the rack. It won't go through the back gate. And the street, in full view, is the worst possible spot for the most expensive bike you'll ever own. So here's how people actually store a cargo bike, and where a secure spot comes in when storing it at home isn't an option. ## Why a cargo bike is harder to park It starts with size. A long-tail or a box bike takes up the space of two or three ordinary bikes, and it won't tuck into a standard rack or a single locker built around a regular frame. That's not a small inconvenience. It's the reason so many cargo bikes end up on the pavement by default, because there was nowhere obvious to put them. Then there's what it's worth. A new electric cargo bike runs well into the thousands, which makes it a target rather than an afterthought. A cheap lock and a hopeful glance over your shoulder don't really match the value of what you're leaving behind. And most of them are electric now, which adds a battery to the equation. A battery left out in the cold loses range, and a bike left out in the rain ages faster than one under a roof. So the ideal spot isn't just locked. It's covered, and ideally somewhere you can charge. ## Storing it at home is best, if you can If you have a shed, a garage, or even a bit of garden, that's the easy answer. Get it behind a door, bolt a ground anchor into the floor or wall, and loop a solid lock through the frame. A carport or an outdoor bike box does the covered part if indoor space is tight, and there are boxes sized for a cargo bike specifically. The catch is that a lot of the people buying cargo bikes are exactly the people without any of that. Third-floor flat in Utrecht, no shed, no garage, a communal hallway the neighbours already complain about. For them "just keep it at home" isn't advice, it's the whole problem. ## When home isn't an option: a shared, secure bike garage This is the part that has quietly changed. If you can't store a cargo bike at home, the realistic alternative is a proper bike garage: a covered, locked, collective space you rent a spot in, rather than a rack out in the weather. It's worth being clear about what fits where. A single locker is built around a normal bike, so a cargo bike usually won't go in one. What does work is the larger storage, the shared garages and collective spaces, and that's the other half of what a system like ours handles. ParkMyBike runs both single lockers and bigger bike garages, and whether it's indoors or out, in a locker or a larger storage solution, the same app opens the door. In practice that means you find a spot near you, reserve it, and unlock it from your phone when you arrive. There's no key to lose and no office to visit. Payment is handled in the app, and you can rent a single time, take a personal subscription for daily use, or set it up through an employer. Where the location supports it, you can charge an e-bike or an electric cargo bike behind a locked door while it waits for you, instead of hauling the battery up three flights of stairs. ## What to check before you park a cargo bike anywhere A few things are worth a look before you commit to a spot. Start with whether it physically fits, because not every space is built for a bike this size. Check the width and length of the bay or the garage, and if you're not sure, ask the operator before you turn up with a box bike and no room to put it. If it's electric, look for charging, so the battery tops up in the dry rather than coming inside with you. Check who runs the location and what it costs, since a municipality or a local provider sets its own rates and conditions. And even behind a locked door, still lock the frame to something fixed. A shared garage keeps the casual thief out; a good lock handles the one who got in anyway. ## The most valuable bike on the street shouldn't sit on the street [ParkMyBike](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""} turns secure, app-controlled bike lockers and garages into one parking system for cyclists, providers and manufacturers, and we're a proud partner of the Dutch Cycling Embassy. Find a spot near you and rent it straight from the app at [parkmybike.app](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""}, or [get in touch](https://www.parkmybike.app/contact){rel=""nofollow""} if you run a location and want to offer secure, app-controlled storage that fits more than just standard bikes. # Secure bike parking at work (the part most offices still get wrong) The bike commute is booming. In the Netherlands the number of trips people make to work by bike rose by more than half in a single year, according to the EU's Urban Mobility Observatory, and plenty of those are now on e-bikes that cost as much as a secondhand car. Which hands every office the same small problem. Someone just rode a three thousand euro e-bike to work, and now it has to sit somewhere for eight hours while they're at their desk. Where it sits, and how safe it is while it sits, is the part a lot of workplaces never really sorted out. ## The rack by the entrance does less than it looks Most offices have a bike rack somewhere near the door. Sometimes under an overhang, often just out in the open. You clip a lock on and head inside. For an old city bike that was fine. For an e-bike the sum is different. The bike is worth more, so it's worth stealing, and it sits in the same visible spot every working day from nine to five, which is exactly the pattern a thief likes. A cable lock comes off in seconds. Even a good lock only buys minutes, and there's nobody watching a quiet company car park in the middle of the afternoon. Add a Dutch winter of rain and salt, and the bike ages faster than it should on top of everything else. ## Then there's the battery The e-bike is what really breaks the old setup, because now there's a battery in the mix. Left outside in the cold, the battery loses range, so people bring it indoors to charge. That solves one problem and starts another. A row of e-bike batteries charging off a cheap power strip under someone's desk is a genuine fire risk, and it's the reason a lot of building managers have quietly banned it. So the battery either sits in the cold losing range, or comes inside where nobody really wants it. Neither is a good answer, and both land on the employee. ## What decent workplace parking actually needs Strip it back and the list is short. The bike needs to be out of the weather, behind something locked rather than out in the open, and reachable only by the people who work there rather than anyone wandering through the car park. If it's an e-bike, there should be somewhere safe to charge it that isn't a power strip under a desk. That's more than a rack, and less than a building project. You don't need to pour concrete or hire a guard. You need covered, locked space with access per person and, ideally, a plug. ## How an employer can offer it without building anything This is the part we work on. ParkMyBike runs secure, app-controlled bike lockers and larger bike garages, and the access and the admin sit in software instead of on a key ring. For a workplace that means staff find their spot, reserve it, and open it from the app on their phone. There's no key to cut, hand out, or chase when someone leaves. It can be arranged through the employer rather than left to each person to sort out alone, so offering secure bike parking becomes something you switch on instead of something you build. Where the location supports it, an e-bike or electric cargo bike charges behind a locked door while its owner is at their desk, instead of the battery coming up in the lift. And it doesn't mean ripping out what's already there. The system works with existing locks as well as our own, so an office or a business park can make the racks and lockers it already has smart rather than starting over. We now run more than 300 subscription parking spaces across the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and France, and the same app opens a locker at a station, a garage on a residential street, or a stall behind an office. ## A few things worth checking If you're weighing it up for a team, a couple of questions save trouble later. Is the space genuinely covered and locked, or just a rack with a roof. Can each person get their own access instead of a shared code that leaks. If people ride e-bikes, is there charging, and is it the kind that keeps the battery out of the building. And who can actually use it, since a spot that only fits standard bikes leaves the cargo bikes and the wider e-bikes back out on the street. ## The commute is only as good as where the bike ends up More people are cycling to work than ever, and the ones on expensive e-bikes are exactly the ones with the most to lose at the far end of the trip. A good rack was enough when bikes were cheap. They aren't anymore. [ParkMyBike](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""} turns secure, app-controlled bike lockers and garages into one parking system for cyclists, providers and manufacturers, and we're a proud partner of the Dutch Cycling Embassy. [Get in touch](https://www.parkmybike.app/contact){rel=""nofollow""} if you want to offer your team secure, app-controlled bike parking without building it from scratch, or find a spot near you at [parkmybike.app](https://www.parkmybike.app/){rel=""nofollow""}. # Bike storage in an apartment building (the shared room is required, so why does it rarely work?) If you live in a flat, the bike has to go somewhere. Up the stairs and into the hallway. Chained to a railing out front. Or down in the shared bike room in the basement. Most new buildings have that last one, because they have to. In the Netherlands a new home has to come with a lockable storage space you can fit a bike in. That rule sat in the old Bouwbesluit for years. It carried over into the Besluit bouwwerken leefomgeving, the building rules under the Omgevingswet. For an apartment block the developer can meet it with one shared bike room instead of a locker per flat. On top of that, the municipality usually sets its own fietsparkeernorm. That norm is often based on the CROW figures, which for homes work out to around two bike spaces per apartment. So the room exists. It's on the drawings, it passed the check, and the keys went out on completion day. And then you go down there six months later, and it doesn't really work. ## One key for the whole building is the problem Look at what the shared room usually turns into. Everyone in the building has the same key or fob. That sounds fine. But count how many people that is. Plus their partners. Plus whoever they lent the key to. Plus the previous tenants who never handed theirs back. A lock only means something if the wrong people can't open it. A door that forty flats can open is not that. Especially when it stands ajar half the time because someone was carrying groceries. Bike theft from communal storage is common for exactly this reason. The thief doesn't have to break in. They walk in behind you, or with a copied fob. And once they're inside they have all the time they need, because nobody down there is watching. The room fills up the same way. Bikes that haven't moved in two years. A broken one nobody has thrown out. A flat that keeps three. Nobody tracks who has a spot or whether they still cycle. So the room reads as full on paper while half of it is dead weight. A new resident moves in, goes to park, finds nowhere to put the bike, and it ends up back in the hallway. Which is where the building manager didn't want it. ## Then the e-bikes arrive The rules were written for a rack of city bikes. That's not what people ride now. A lot of those bikes are e-bikes worth a couple of thousand euros. Some are cargo bikes that take up the space of two. Two things break at once. The expensive bike is now sitting in a room a whole building can open, so that weak lock is suddenly guarding a lot more value. Then there's the battery. Left in a cold basement it loses range, so people carry it up to the flat. There they charge it off a socket in the hall. That's exactly what building managers have started banning, because a battery charging unattended is a real fire risk. Neither answer is good. And both land on the resident. ## What a shared bike room actually needs The list is short. Each person needs their own access, not a key the whole building shares. The room needs to close properly, not sit propped open all day. There has to be space for the bikes people actually own, e-bikes and cargo bikes included, not just narrow standard frames. And if there are e-bikes, there should be a safe place to charge that isn't a socket in someone's hallway. That's more than the room the developer signs off, but less than tearing anything out. You don't need a new building. You need the room you already have to lock per person, to be managed by someone who can see what's going on inside it, and to take the bikes people ride today. ## How to fix the room you already have This is the part we work on. ParkMyBike puts the access and the admin for a bike room into software instead of onto a key ring. It works with a shared room as well as with individual lockers. For a building, that means the following. Each resident gets their own access from the app on their phone. There's no shared fob to copy, and nothing to chase when someone moves out. Their space frees up in the system the day they leave and goes to the next person, without a key ever changing hands. The manager, the VvE, or the housing provider sees the whole room from one dashboard: who has a spot, which spaces are actually in use, and where the dead bikes are sitting. Where the location supports it, an e-bike or an electric cargo bike charges behind a locked door instead of the battery coming up in the lift. And it doesn't mean ripping out what's there. The system works with existing locks as well as our own. So a building can make the bike room it already has smart rather than starting over. We now run more than 300 subscription parking spaces across the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and France. A fair share of them are exactly this kind of shared residential space. And the same app opens a locker at a station, a garage on a residential street, or the bike room under a block of flats. ## The room on the drawings isn't the room that works A new building comes with a bike room because the law asks for one. But does that room keep a three thousand euro e-bike safe? Does it have space for it? Can its owner charge it there? That's a separate question, and it's the one residents actually care about. The room is the easy part. Running it so it works is the rest. Slim ruimtegebruik is essentieel, zeker in drukke stedelijke gebieden waar iedere vierkante meter telt. Alles is dus perfect geïntegreerd! 2. **Ruimtegebruik** – In drukke steden is ruimte schaars. Daarom is flexibiliteit zo belangrijk. ## Samengevat: In 2025…
